Who Will Be Chelsea’s Number One This Season?

Chelsea have been extremely active in the transfer market in recent years and some fans have questioned how they have managed to stay within the financial fair play rules.

The Blues have been busy again this week and one of their latest acquisitions is goalkeeper, Filip Jorgensen.

The 22 year old Swede has been playing his football for Villarreal in Spain’s La Liga and made 36 appearances for the club in the league last season. Despite starting his career as youth player in Sweden, Jorgensen moved from the Malmo youth team to the Villarreal youth team back in 2017.

Villarreal clearly spotted the potential of Jorgensen and he made 41 appearances for the Villarreal B team between 2020 and 2023 before being promoted to the senior team in 2023.

Jorgensen played in La Liga for Villarreal for the first time last season and conceded a total of 65 goals. That seems like a lot and it is a considerable number of goals, with only the relegated duo of Almeria and Granada conceding more goals than Villarreal.

However, the stats also show Jorgensen made 143 saves throughout the season, with no other goalkeeper being called into action more often than the Swede. That statistic underlines his shot stopping ability and Chelsea did face a high number of shots last season.

They have also looked vulnerable in defence in preseason, so a good shot stopper is going to be key in the Premier League this season.

Jorgensen is also good with the ball at his feet and that is going to be vital under the management of Enzo Maresca.

The Italian likes to employ a possession style of play and the Chelsea goalkeeper will be a key element of keeping the ball for Chelsea this coming season. Jorgensen averaged 44.7 successful passes per 90 minutes with Villarreal last season and completed over 1,000 passes during the campaign. So, it is clear from the stats that Jorgensen is happy with the ball at his feet.

There are some weaknesses to note for Chelsea fans and conceding 65 goals last season is obviously one of them. A poor Villarreal defence was part of the problem but it does nothing for a goalkeepers confidence when they are regularly picking the ball out of the back of net.

Jorgensen struggled from crosses last season and stopped just 5.2% of crosses that came into the Villarreal box. Should he start for Chelsea in the Premier League, opposition managers will be performing their statistical analysis and trying to use that to their advantage.

Robert Sanchez will be under pressure and along with Djordje Petrovic, there are three players competing to be Chelsea’s first choice goalkeeper next season. However, the addition of Jorgensen suggests one of Sanchez and Petrovic will be leaving Stamford Bridge.

Will Sanchez be willing to sit on the bench for much of the season? It is unlikely and it could be the Spaniard who makes way and allows Jorgensen a clear path to become Chelsea’s number one.
