Players to Watch at the Olympic Games

Two major international football competitions this summer may be complete but there is one more to enjoy before the major leagues kick-off in Europe.

The 2024 Olympic Games men’s football tournament starts on the 24th of July in France and we look ahead to some of the players to watch.

There is no doubt who is the highest profile player at the 2024 Olympic Games and his name is Julian Alvarez. The Manchester City forward will be playing for the Argentina team in France and is looking to add to his impressive trophy collection.

Alavarez’s trophy stats are incredible and at the age of 24 he has won the World Cup, Copa America, Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, Copa Libertadores, Argentine Primera División, and Copa Argentina.

An Olympic Games gold medal would be the icing on the cake for Alvarez, who has scored 9 goals in 36 appearances for his country and netted 11 goals in 36 games for Manchester City in the Premier League last season. If Argentina are to succeed at the 2024 Olympics, there is a good chance Alvarez will be top scorer.

You must go back to 2017 to find the last time Alexandre Lacazette played international football for France but the Lyon striker will captain the French team at the 2024 Olympics.

It is an exciting opportunity for the 33 year old to lead a team at a home Olympic games. Lacazette scored 22 goals in 35 games in Ligue 1 last season, so he comes into the competition in good form. Lacazette has found the back of the net twice in friendlies ahead of the tournament to add to his 3 goals for the full senior French team.

Achraf Hakimi is another Ligue 1 player who will represent his country at the Olympic Games. The Paris Saint-Germain fullback was part of the Morocco team that reached the semi-final of the 2022 World Cup and Hakimi will be hoping to go one better at the 2024 Olympics.

Despite being only 25 years old, the statistics show Hakimi has played 77 times for the senior Morocco team, scoring 9 goals. Hakimi is on course to win well over 100 caps for Morocco and will want to put the 2 penalties he missed in a pre-tournament friendly behind him.

Fermin Lopez is hoping to make history by winning both the European Championship and Olympic Games in the same summer. The Barcelona winger had limited game time at the European Championship but is sure to be in the first XI at the Olympics.

Lopez scored 11 goals in all competitions for Barcelona last season in what was a breakout campaign for the 21 year old. If Spain are to go all the way in France, we predict Lopez to have a considerable influence on their matches.

Finally, we come to Bayern Munich’s new signing, Michael Olise. The 22 year old winger is yet to play for the full senior French team but has performed well in the build up to the 2024 Olympics, scoring 3 goals.

Olise could form a potent attacking threat with Lacazette, providing crosses from out wide and he is also good from set-pieces. Olise only made 14 starts for Crystal Palace last season but recorded 10 goals and 6 assists.

Only 3 players who featured in more than 15 games had more successful dribbles than Olise in the Premier League last season, meaning he should be exciting to watch in France this summer.
