All the European Trebles in History

Manchester City are on course to become just the second English team to ever win a treble with a date in the FA Cup final, the upperhand in the Premier League title race, and a path to the Champions League final.

We take a look back on all the other nine trebles in football history.

Celtic (1966/67)

British football was booming again in the 1960s, but it was Celtic who reached the summit on the club front by winning the Scottish Football League, Scottish Cup and the European Cup.

In fact, Celtic competed for five trophies that year and won them all after winning the Scottish League Cup and the Glasgow Cup. It remains the most successful season in British history under manager Jock Stein.

Ajax (1971/72)

Arguably the most impressive feat from these nine triumphs is Ajax's stunning record in 1971/72 that saw them lose just one of their 48 games, draw five and win the other 42.

Johan Cruyff was the hero once again that year with 33 goals, as he went on to win his second of three Ballon d'Ors.

It was also part of Ajax’s domination of Europe by winning three European Cups in a row from 1971-1973.

PSV Eindhoven (1987/1988)

PSV Eindhoven are the only other side to win the treble from the Netherlands, but their triumph was nowhere near as impressive.

In fact, they won just three of their European Cup games and made it past the quarter-finals and semi-finals on away goals and beat Benfica in the final on penalties.

Wim Kieft was the hero that year, as he scored 29 goals in the Eredivisie, as PSV recorded a stunning tally of 117 goals in 34 league games.

Manchester United (1998/1999)

The first and only English team to do the treble, as Manchester United put together arguably the most impressive run we’ve ever seen.

In England, the club beat a marvelous Arsenal team to the Premier League title and beat the likes of the Gunners, Liverpool and Newcastle United en route to an FA Cup win.

In Europe, they also had to get past Inter Milan, Juventus, Bayern Munich and Barcelona. What’s more, the two goals in stoppage time against Bayern in the Champions League final are without question the two most famous goals in the competition’s history.

Bayern Munich (2012/13, 2019/20)

One year after losing the Champions League in their own backyard, Bayern Munich went on to dominate Europe and Germany in 2012/13, losing only three games and winning 46 of the 54 matches.

They were even more impressive in 2019/20, as they went on to win every game except for a draw with RB Leipzig from December until the end of the season, meaning a 30-game unbeaten run with 29 wins.

That team was also the only side to ever win every single Champions League game, as Robert Lewandowski netted 55 goals in all competitions.

Inter Milan (2009/10)

Led by Jose Mourinho, Inter won the Serie A for the fifth consecutive season and became the only Italian side to ever win the treble by beating Bayern Munich in the final.

Diego Milito scored 30 goals that season, and Wesley Sneijder was controversially snubbed for the Ballon d’Or against Lionel Messi.

Barcelona (2008/09, 2014/15)

As Pep Guardiola goes for another treble, he’ll look back on his time with Barcelona in 2008/09 as motivation. In the eyes of many, including the treble winner, Sir Alex Ferguson, consider this side the greatest of all time in the early days of the tika taka.

Thierry Henry, Lionel Messi and Samuel Eto'o scored a combined 100 goals that year, as Guardiola beat Ferguson in the final.

Five seasons later, Messi was joined by Neymar and Luis Suarez to form the best front three in football history. The trio scored 112 goals between, assisting each other for most of those as well back in 2014/15.
