Timo Werner returns to RB Leipzig – Why did he fail to make an impact at Chelsea?

When Timo Werner joined Chelsea from RB Leipzig for £47.5 million in June 2020, he looked destined to take the Premier League by storm. Two years later, the forward is back at Leipzig after failing to live up to expectations.

Between 2016 and 2020, Werner racked up 90 goals and 40 assists in 156 appearances for Leipzig. Having posted eye-catching numbers in Germany, he was expected to shine at Stamford Bridge.

However, the 26-year-old managed just 23 goals in 89 games for Chelsea – despite getting plenty of opportunities. Following two difficult years in London, he sealed a return to Leipzig for £25.3 million earlier this week.

So, why did Werner fail to make an impact at Chelsea?

Funnily enough, the German made an impressive start to his Chelsea career. He bagged four goals and five assists in his first 14 Premier League games, cementing his place in Thomas Tuchel’s starting XI.

But a 14-game goal drought between November and February halted Werner’s progress. Worse still, he managed to score just two goals across his final 27 league appearances in 2020/21.

Although Werner notched four goals and two assists to help the Blues secure the 2020/21 UEFA Champions League title, he gained as reputation as a wasteful finisher. He invariably found himself in the right place at the right time, but struggled to convert his chances.

Last season, the unconfident forward scored a measly four goals in 21 Premier League outings. He managed just 15 league starts in 2021/22, in addition to six substitute appearances.

Granted, Werner suffered from injuries and COVID-19 last term. But he flattered to deceive when given the opportunity. On top of that, the return of Romelu Lukaku limited Werner’s minutes.

When Lukaku returned to Inter Milan on a season-long loan in June, many believed that Werner would be given more opportunities to prove his worth in 2022/23. But it wasn’t meant to be.

Few would argue that Werner is not a top-class player. Boasting lightning-quick pace, clever movement and a hunger for goals, the Stuttgart-born forward possesses all the right attributes to thrive at the highest level.

Yet, for one reason or another, he failed to settle at Chelsea. Hopefully, Werner can rediscover his best form at Leipzig.
