Everton edging to Premier League safety

Wednesday night could have been a big one in the fight for Premier League survival, as Leeds suffered a 3-0 home defeat by Chelsea. However, relegation rivals Everton could only pick up a 0-0 draw at already-relegated Watford.

The results leave Frank Lampard’s Everton just two points clear of the drop zone, with Burnley and Leeds both trailing the Toffees by two points.

Although Leeds are level on points with Burnley, they have played an extra game than both Burnley and the men from Merseyside.

It is that game in hand that could see Everton escape the relegation dogfight, especially as they have home games against mid-table Brentford and Crystal Palace to come next.

The Toffees have built a stronger home record in recent months. They are currently unbeaten in four Premier League matches at Goodison Park, having picked up ten points. The fans have made the grand old stadium a bear pit with their partisan support.

The way things are going the Toffees are just edging themselves to safety. A draw against struggling Watford was not the best result.

However, it was another point to safety and a rare clean sheet on their travels this season.

The result keeps Everton above the relegation and that is what is vital at this point in the season.

The Toffees must ensure safety as soon as they can but now look like favourites out of the three relegation candidates to beat the drop.

If the Toffees do survive the drop this season, then head coach Lampard and the club's recruitment team will no doubt look to overhaul this underachieving squad in the summer to ensure there is no repeat of this season.

Their Premier League status is not yet ensured. However, it would now be a surprise if one of the longest-serving teams in the English top flight now suffers relegation this season.
