As we approach the end of the 2021-22 Premier League season, there is still plenty of uncertainty. Can Liverpool overtake Manchester City? Who will get relegated? And who will finish in the top four?
Despite all the uncertainty, one thing is unquestionable: Trent Alexander-Arnold is among the Premier League’s elite performers.
Of course, few would argue that Alexander-Arnold is not one of the best in the business. But not many football fans understand the true extent of his influence on Jurgen Klopp’s team.
With the end of the campaign in sight, it’s time to take a look at the Premier League statistics that Liverpool’s flying right-back leads.
First, Alexander-Arnold has made more progressive passes than any other player this season (251). Joao Cancelo is his nearest rival in this particular metric (233), followed by Bruno Fernandes (179).
The 23-year-old has also made the most through balls in the Premier League (18), ahead of Harry Kane (16), Mohamed Salah (16) and Fernandes (14).
On top of that, he leads the league for crosses (109) and shot-creating actions (137). Let’s not forget that he is classed as a defender!
Alexander-Arnold has also accumulated the highest xA – expected assists – of any player this term (10.4), as well as the joint-highest xA/90 alongside Kevin De Bruyne (0.36).
Given that he has registered 12 assists in the Premier League this season, he is actually outperforming his xA.
It is also worth noting that only one player – Mohamed Salah – has notched more Premier League assists than Alexander-Arnold during the 2021-22 campaign.
Across all competitions, the Merseysider has chalked up two goals and 18 assists in 40 appearances this season – highlighting his importance to Liverpool.
Everybody knows that Alexander-Arnold is a special player. However, when you dive deeper into the statistics, you gain a new appreciation for his work.
As it stands, the quadruple is still achievable for Liverpool. Having already won the Carabao Cup, they remaining in contention for the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup.
Naturally, Salah grabs the majority of the headlines due to his phenomenal goalscoring record. But if Liverpool end up winning multiple trophies this season, Alexander-Arnold must get the recognition he deserves.
