The Underrated Premier League XI for 2021-22

The Underrated Premier League XI for 2021-22
1964

With Manchester City and Liverpool set to dominate the Premier League Team of the Season, we’ve put together the XI of the names who probably won’t get talked about.

Jose Sa

Jose Sa certainly deserves a shoutout with 11 clean sheets to date with 33 appearances in the league - only the top five teams' keepers in the league boast more. The Wolverhampton Wanderers man has also made 110 saves in the league, which is the fourth-best in the division.

Craig Dawson

David Moyes has set down the foundations of his West Ham United team based on excellent defensive work, and Craig Dawson has been the man creating a wall at the back for the Hammers. He’s managed to score two goals and get two assists as well, with the Englishman playing 31 times for West Ham as they challenge for the European spots once more.

Gabriel

Max Kilamn and Kurt Zouma could easily be within this second centre-back spot, but Gabriel has been one of the league’s best this season and his brilliance hasn’t quite been spoken of because of Arsenal’s attacking excellence. The Brazilian has been fantastic on the ball, has scored the joint-most in the league this year as a defender, and is largely responsible for an Arsenal side sitting fourth.

Conor Coady

Once again, Conor Coady has played every single game for Wolves this season, and with 29 goals conceded, the England international is responsible for creating the fourth-best defence in the Premier League. Coady has also scored three times, and joins Gabriel as the highest-scoring centre-back.

James Ward-Prowse

James Ward-Prowse may honestly be the greatest free-kick taker that’s ever played the game. The Southampton midfielder is very much a highly-rated star already, but he won’t get into the Team of the Season and still struggles to get into the England squad, but he could certainly get in both. With nine league goals - four of which have been stunning free-kicks - Ward-Prowse is perhaps the first name on the teamsheet in the underrated XI.

Conor Gallagher

As probably the best young player of the campaign, Conor Gallagher easily gets into the underrated XI. The Englishman has scored eight goals and registered three assists this campaign, and he, like Ward-Prowse, is one of the first names on the teamsheet.

Tomas Soucek

It’s been another memorable campaign for Tomas Soucek, and he has once again been scoring goals, threatening the opposition each game, and played a huge role in the defensive work for West Ham.He’s an integral part of the Hammers’ setup, and he remains one of the league’s most underrated talents.

Joelinton

If there was an award for most improved player, Joelinton would easily win it. The Brazilian was signed as a forward for a club record fee, and he rapidly became one of the worst signings the league has ever seen.Joelinton has this season transformed into a physically-astute and confident midfielder who excels in both defensive and attacking ability. He has four goals, has constantly been a thorn in the opposition under Eddie Howe, and deserves many more compliments than he is currently getting.

Jarrod Bowen

Likely West Ham’s player of the season, Jarrod Bowen deserves to be in the England squad and the Team of the Season. Sadly, he isn’t getting past the likes of Mohamed Salah and Son Heung-min, and for England, Gareth Southgate simply favours the top six sides’ players too often. Bowen has nine goals and 10 assists, and has been a threat from the first minute to the present day.

Ivan Toney

Ivan Toney has been the highest-scoring player outside of the top six, and by some distance. He is a quintessential number nine, and with his 12 goals being the same as Harry Kane, it’s been a fantastic debut season for Toney.

Allan Saint-Maximin

Newcastle are into the top 10 of the Premier League now, and much of this comes thanks to Allan Saint-Maximin’s ability to take on players like he’s playing a Playstation. The Frenchman has five goals and four assists, and every time the Magpies score, he seems to have some say.
