The odds are now against Everton avoiding historic relegation

The fight for survival in the Premier League has taken several twists and turns in recent months. After the weekend’s results, Everton finds themselves in 18th place in the table, a point behind 17th place Burnley, although with a game in hand.
A 2-0 derby defeat at title-challenging city-rivals Liverpool was not unexpected for the men from Merseyside.
The relegation is far from cut and dry, but many believe that this could be the season that ends Everton’s 68-year presence in the English top flight.
Only Arsenal have spent more consecutive years in the top tier of the English game than the Toffees.
However, no club has spent more years in the English top-flight altogether than Everton.
The fixtures are certainly against the out-of-form team from Merseyside beating the drop to the Championship.
Frank Lampard’s team face Chelsea at home this weekend before trips to Leicester and Watford.
The latter two fixtures wouldn’t usually be that daunting. However, the Toffees have won just once away from home in the Premier League this season. To make matters worse they are currently on a run of seven straight away losses in the English top-flight.
Their saving grace this season may well prove to be their home form, as they are currently three league matches unbeaten on home soil in the Premier League. The home games against the likes of Brentford and Crystal Palace could well prove to be the decisive factor in survival.
Another problem for the Toffees is that they are low on confidence and the teams around them have hit form and are picking up results.
For example, Burnley has won three of their last five league matches, including picking up back-to-back wins. The Claret's schedule also looks kinder than Everton’s.
Everton head coach Frank Lampard and his staff will be attempting to instil confidence in his team and hope that they can somehow escape the relegation zone to avoid a historic relegation.
