Liverpool and Manchester United are in different leagues
1905
It would be hard to find a better illustration of the gap between north west rivals Liverpool and Manchester United than Tuesday night’s game at Anfield.
The men from Merseyside emerged from the game as 4-0 winners, as Jurgen Klopp’s team moved to the top of the Premier League table. It was a case of men against boys and was another stark lesson of where the two teams are right now.>
In previous years, the north west derbies between these two old foes would have been games that had big implications on the title race.
It would have been hard to call the result and fans from both sides of the divide would ponder what the result would be. However, nowadays most United fans could have predicted another fruitless trip along the M62 to Anfield.
The fact that the Reds also hammered the United 5-0 at Old Trafford also shows the massive gap in quality between the respective teams.
United head coach Ralf Rangnick recently stated that the Red Devils need to massively overhaul their squad if they are to be successful.
Rangnick will not be at the helm next season. The next Manchester United permanent boss has got a big job on his hands attempting to rebuild what is a mediocre squad of players.
Poor recruitment has led the Red Devils to a state where they have spent money on players, but have very little to show for their spending in the last decade.
Liverpool on the other hand has been superb when it has come to the constant evolution of their squad. The signing of Luis Diaz is just the latest example of their shrewd dealings.
It is going to take a long time for Manchester United to get back to anywhere near Liverpool’s current standard. At the moment, they are quite simply in different leagues.
