As we approach the end of the 2021/22 English Premier League season, it’s time to start thinking about who will win the PFA Young Player of the Year award.

From Ian Rush and David Beckham to Wayne Rooney and Raheem Sterling, the award has been won by some illustrious names over the years. But who are the favourites this season?

Here are five starlets who are in contention to be named the 2021/22 PFA Young Player of the Year.

• Phil Foden – Manchester City

Phil Foden won the award last year, having racked up nine goals and five assists in 28 Premier League appearances. With seven goals and three assists to his name this season, he is on course to emulate his tally from the previous campaign.

It is easy to forget that Foden is still only 21. After all, the super-gifted midfielder has already played 162 games for Manchester City and could claim his fourth Premier League title with the club next month.

• Bukayo Saka – Arsenal

Bukayo Saka burst onto the scene last season, registering five goals and four assists in the Premier League. However, he has taken his game to another level this term – bagging nine goals and five assists in 31 league outings.

The versatile winger has quickly become one of Arsenal’s most important players. If he doesn’t win the PFA Young Player of the Year award this season, the 20-year-old is still young enough to claim the award next year.

• Conor Gallagher – Crystal Palace

To say that Conor Gallagher has enjoyed a successful loan spell at Crystal Palace would be an understatement. Since joining the Eagles from Chelsea, he has contributed eight goals and five assists in all competitions.

Gallagher is a true box-to-box midfielder. Not only is he capable of scoring goals, but he is also willing to do the dirty work for his side. That makes him a genuine PFA Young Player of the Year contender.

• Reece James – Chelsea

Sadly, Reece James’ 2021/22 campaign has been hampered by injury. Even so, the marauding right-back has been able to chip in with five goals and six assists in 19 Premier League outings for Chelsea.

At 22, James is no spring chicken in football terms. But since he was 21 at the beginning of the season, he is eligible to win the PFA Young Player of the Year award.

• Jacob Ramsey – Aston Villa

It’s safe to say that 2021/22 has been a breakout season for Jacob Ramsey. The 20-year-old midfielder has featured in all but two of Aston Villa 31 league games this term, netting six goals along the way.

Ramsey has become a pivotal part of the Villa machine under Steven Gerrard. He also earned his first England U21 call-up earlier in the campaign and scored in the recent 4-1 thrashing of Andorra.
