Can anyone catch Mohamed Salah in the Premier League Golden Boot race?

As we head into the home stretch of the 2021-22 Premier League season, Mohamed Salah leads the Golden Boot race with 20 goals. Can any catch Liverpool’s Egyptian King?

Before we take a closer look at the leading contenders, let’s check out the current Premier League goalscoring charts.

  • Mohamed Salah, Liverpool – 20
  • Son Heung-min, Tottenham Hotspur – 17
  • Diogo Jota, Liverpool – 15
  • Sadio Mane, Liverpool – 13
  • Harry Kane, Tottenham Hotspur – 12
  • Ivan Toney, Brentford – 12
  • Cristiano Ronaldo, Manchester United – 12

As you can see, Salah finds himself three goals clear of Son Heung-min. Salah’s teammates, Diogo Jota and Sadio Mane, have scored 15 and 13 goals, respectively.

Meanwhile, three players – Harry Kane, Ivan Toney and Cristiano Ronaldo – have netted 12 goals. Is it too late for them to mount a serious charge for the Golden Boot?

Although Salah is in pole position, there is no denying that his form his dipped recently. Having scored 16 goals in the first 20 Premier League games, he has bagged just four across the previous nine.

While Salah’s form has dipped, Son’s has skyrocketed. The South Korean has netted six goals in his past three league appearances, including a hat-trick against Aston Villa last time out.

Jota appears to be rediscovering his best form, having scored in each of his previous three Premier League outings. Meanwhile, Mane has bagged five in seven.

Of course, Kane, Toney and Ronaldo still stand an outside chance of winning the Golden Boot. But they would have to produce exceptional form and hope that Salah stays quiet.

Still, it is worth noting that Kane has finished as the Premier League’s top scorer in three of the past eight seasons. He is also reigning Golden Boot winner, having netted 23 goals in 35 games last term.

Despite Jota’s recent return to form, it feels like Son is Salah’s only realistic challenger in the race for the Golden Boot.

While the Tottenham forward has continued to bolster his tally in recent weeks, Salah’s productivity has slowed down. All of a sudden, Son finds himself just three goals behind the Liverpool star.

Not only has Son scored six goals across the last three Premier League games, but he has also netted 13 across the previous 17. Needless to say, that is Golden Boot-winning form.

Ultimately, it wouldn’t be a shock if Salah clinched the Golden Boot. But if anyone is going to stop him, then Son will almost certainly be the player to do it.
