Ranking the top 5 goalkeepers in Premier League history
2248

From former stars like Peter Schmeichel and David Season to modern-day heroes such as Alisson and Ederson, the Premier League has been blessed with countless world-class shot-stoppers over the years.

Who are the best Premier League goalkeepers of all time? Of course, that is a difficult question to answer. But there is no harm an attempting to rank the top five, right?

5. Nigel Martyn

Back in 1989, Nigel Martyn became the first goalkeeper to be transferred for £1 million when he moved from Bristol Rovers to Crystal Palace. The rest, as they say, is history.

Martyn went on to make 372 Premier League appearances for Palace, Leeds and Everton – keeping 137 clean sheets along the way. He also won 23 caps for England, despite competing alongside David Seaman (more on him later).

4. Edwin van der Sar

Edwin van der Sar made a name for himself at Ajax and Juventus before joining Fulham in 2001. However, there is no denying that he enjoyed his best years between the sticks for Manchester United.

“The Flying Dutchman” helped the Red Devils to win four Premier League titles and one Champions League crown. In the Premier League he kept 132 clean sheets in 313 appearances.

3. David Seaman

We all know that Gordan Banks and Peter Shilton are widely regarded as England’s best-ever goalkeepers. But in terms of the Premier League era, few would argue that David Seaman is not the best English goalkeeper.

Seamen kept 141 clean sheets in 344 Premier League games, meaning he sits fourth on the all-time leaderboard. On top of that, he won two Premier League titles and four FA Cups with the Gunners.

2. Petr Cech

Petr Cech has kept more Premier League clean sheets than any other goalkeeper in history. With 202 shutouts to his name, Cech sits 33 clear of his nearest rival – David James.

The former Czech Republic international kept 40 clean sheets for Arsenal before achieving a whopping 162 shutouts for Chelsea. During his time with the Blues, he won four Premier League titles, four FA Cups and a Champions League title to boot.

1. Peter Schmeichel

Although Peter Schmeichel finds himself eleventh on the Premier League's all-time clean sheet leaderboard, his dominating presence and unrivalled reflexes make him the best goalkeeper in Premier League history.

The giant Dane played a pivotal role in Sir Alex Ferguson’s dominant Man Utd side, winning five league titles in seven years between 1993 and 1999. He kept 128 clean sheets in 310 games, giving him a shutout rate of 41.29%.
