Manchester City vs Atletico Madrid is still on a knife-edge

On Tuesday night, Manchester City recorded a 1-0 home win over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League quarter-final first leg.

The first leg went pretty much as most observers expected it to go, with City dominating possession and Atletico defending for their life for much of the game and hoping to hit the home team on the counterattack.

It was a fascinating clash of footballing cultures of Pep Guardiola and Diego Simeone. The game illustrated that there is no one way to play football. Atletico’s disciplined defensive display paid off until the 70th minute when Kevin de Bruyne opened the scoring after good play by substitute Phil Foden.

In the end, neither team will be too disappointed by the result heading into the second leg at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Manchester City will have wanted a slightly bigger lead, but they will still feel that they are in control of the tie. Atletico meanwhile will feel that they are still very much in the tie and can recover from the first-leg loss.

The men from Madrid will not stray too far from Diego Simeone’s famous football style of play in the second leg. However, the reigning Spanish champions will have to come out slightly at some point in the second leg.

Los Rojiblancos failed to have a single shot on target in the first half at the Etihad Stadium, despite the presence of the likes of in-form Joao Felix and France international Antoine Griezmann in their team.

Atletico needs their fans to do their bit at the Wanda, as City are no doubt one of the best club teams in the world. Simeone and his team are always best when they have something to defend, but they will need to take slightly more risks.

The second leg could be highly fascinating if City don’t score an early goal. However, if they do then it will be a long way back for Simeone and his team.
