Napoli have a massive opportunity this season

The race for this season’s Serie A title looks set to be one of the most exciting for years, with both Milan giants Inter and Milan competing with Napoli for the Scudetto.

There is also the possibility of a late title challenge from former dominant force Juventus, who have suddenly found form in recent months.

Maybe the most interesting contenders are Napoli. Despite a long and storied history, the team from Naples have only ever won the Scudetto twice in their whole history.

Both titles were inspired by the late great Diego Armando Maradona. Since the Argentinian helped the Azzurri in 1987 and 1990, Napoli has failed to add to their Serie A titles.

This season could well offer the team from Italy’s third-largest city to win that long-awaited third Scudetto.

They have gone close to becoming Italian champions again in the recent past, most notably under now-Lazio boss Maurizio Sarri. However, they just failed to get over the line.

However, Luciano Spalletti’s team could write their name in the folklore of Italian football. In previous seasons, a team has run away with the title, Juventus or last season Inter.

This season it is tight at the top heading into the final third of the season. Napoli are top of the table but are only above Milan courtesy of a superior goal difference to Rossoneri. Reigning champions Inter are just two points adrift of the pair, having played a game fewer.

Neither of the Milan giants have been that convincing of late, as it seems nobody seems to want to win the Scudetto this season.

If Napoli can maintain some steady form then they will have a chance to make history.

With club icon Lorenzo Insigne leaving this summer, and fellow stalwart Dries ‘Ciro’ Mertens also out of contract it would be a fantastic way to say farewell to the club the pair have served so well for so long.
