Tottenham’s chances of finishing in the top-four are in danger of slipping away

The race for the fourth Champions League spot in the Premier League could be one of the most intense in recent years. One of the teams considered as contenders to secure that all-important fourth-place is Tottenham.
The team from north London made an underwhelming start to the campaign which led to the departure of high-profile head coach Jose Mourinho in November. The Portuguese’s replacement Antonio Conte is also regarded as one of the best coaches of his generation.
The appointment of the much-decorated head coach led to great optimism amongst those connected with Spurs.
Conte’s arrival did inspire an initial upturn in fortunes that saw Tottenham climb closer to the Champions League spots.
However, a recent poor run of form, including three straight league defeats against Chelsea, Southampton and Wolves has dampened the optimism of Conte’s early days at the club.
Tottenham now find themselves eighth-place in the table, but more importantly seven points behind Manchester United, who occupy that final Champions League spot.
Spurs have three games in hand on the Red Devils. However, this weekend Conte’s team face a trip to reigning Premier League champions and league leaders Manchester City.
The game could not come at a worse time for the north London team, as City have won their last four games while scoring nine goals in their last two matches.
That second fact doesn’t bode well for Spurs, who have conceded at least two goals in their last four Premier League matches.
Conte’s teams are normally well organised and solid. That solidity has been missing in recent league matches and that could well lead to Spurs challenge for the Champions League spots fading.
Their Italian head coach needs to call on all his tactical acumen and experience to make sure that this season doesn’t just fizzle out far too early.
