Eriksen’s Premier League return a deadline day fairy-tale

Eriksen’s Premier League return a deadline day fairy-tale
1990

Back in June, Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest in a Euro 2020 clash against Finland. The then-Inter midfielder received treatment on the pitch and reportedly died for five minutes doing that treatment.

Seven months later, the midfielder is not only fully recovered and thriving, the 29-year-old has now joined Premier League Brentford until the end of the season. It could well be the perfect solution for both the player and the Bees.

If the midfielder can get anywhere close to the form he once produced during six-and-a-half years at Tottenham, he could be a shrewd signing. He followed that very successful spell in north London with a short stint in Italy with reigning champions Inter.

Unfortunately, rules surrounding his implantable cardioverter-defibrillator device (ICD) meant that he was no longer allowed to play in the Italian top-flight. The Nerazzurri then agreed to cancel Eriksen’s contract, so he can resume his playing career elsewhere.

A move back to the Premier League has always been mooted. Brentford with compatriot Thomas Frank as head coach seemed like the right club to help the midfielder restart his career after such a long absence from the game.

Eriksen has stated recently that he is in good shape physically. He has been training in Switzerland and at former club, Ajax to get into shape to play in the English top-flight. Some observers have called it a gamble for Brentford and Eriksen.

However, in reality, both parties have very little to risk in the midfielder signing a deal until the end of the season. Eriksen has been through all the physical tests and is obviously keen to get back on to the pitch.

The midfielder returning to the Premier League is fantastic and there is unlikely to be a more uplifting story than the Danes on transfer deadline day.
