Fresh Outlook at Sevilla Could Help Martial and Manchester United

It is clear Manchester United need to move some players on if they are to strengthen the squad and several fringe players have been linked with a move away from Old Trafford in the January transfer window.

Jesse Lingard is one player in-particular who has been linked with a transfer in the winter window but to date, Anthony Martial is the biggest name to leave Manchester United.

The French forward has joined Sevilla on a loan deal until the end of the season. No fee is involved but Sevilla will pay Martial’s wages in full. It is an interesting move, especially considering Martial participated in the move that led to the winning goal for Manchester United in their crucial victory over West Ham United in the Premier League recently.

However, a look at the statistics this season shows Martial has started only two Premier League games. He started at Southampton early in the season and at home against Everton in October, with both matches ending in a 1-1 draw.

The Frenchman has played just 210 minutes of league football this season, leaving him well behind the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Mason Greenwood, and Jadon Sancho in terms of playing time.

Martial has scored one goal for Manchester United this season and has not made a single assist. Having forced his way back into the French international squad, Martial has since lost his place and he will be keen to start football matches in a bid to be involved at the 2022 World Cup.

Nonetheless, there can be no doubting Martial has the talent to succeed at the highest level. You only have to look at his best moments for Manchester United to see what he can produce on the football pitch.

In 2019/20, Martial scored 17 league goals and 23 goals in all competitions, underlining what he can do in a Manchester United shirt. The consistent change of manager at a club is not good for any player and Martial was being asked to do different things under different managers.

Speaking about Martial’s departure, Ralf Rangnick, the current Manchester United boss, said, “I know he is a top player, one of the best strikers in the Premier League, but we have other players in his position. It is his wish to leave, but like I said to him, it always takes different parts to find an agreement.”

Sevilla are pushing for the title in Spain and Martial will be aiming to score the goals to take them to the summit. It could be a move that sees Martial shine and if he enjoys his spell in Spain, he could come back a new player for Manchester United next season.

Cristiano Ronaldo will be another year older and Edinson Cavani will likely have left the club. There is still an opportunity for Martial at Manchester United and the move to Sevilla could be the catalyst for a positive change in his career at Old Trafford.
