Could Salah Leave Liverpool this Summer?

Could Salah Leave Liverpool this Summer?
1196

Jurgen Klopp spoke about the future of Mohamed Salah this week while the forward was away on international duty with his country. Salah’s contract with Liverpool expires in June 2023 and the club  are obviously keen to tie him down to a new deal.

Salah is one of the best players in the world and is currently in the prime of his career. It would be a massive blow to lose him now and would send out the wrong statement about Liverpool Football Club.

“There are, I think, enough reasons for being pretty positive,” Klopp said when speaking about a new deal with Salah. “‘Good conversations’ — that’s what I could say. These things take time. Nobody has to worry. It’s just the situation.”

In a GQ Magazine interview during which Salah posed in a retro Liverpool shirt, the player was quoted as saying, “They (Liverpool) know what I want,” and “I’m not asking for crazy stuff.”

However, although there seems to be no cause for concern right now, the clock is ticking and Liverpool do not want to find themselves in a situation this time next season when Salah can begin negotiating with other teams in Europe.

If Salah does not sign a new deal with Liverpool, he will be in a position to negotiate a contract with a European club and move for free next summer.

Salah will turn 30 in June and realistically, he has one big contract remaining to sign in his career and he is sure to want to get the best deal he can for himself and his family.

Some onlookers believe there will not be many takers for Salah next summer as he will be the other side of 30. However, without having to pay a transfer fee, the likes of Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are not going to put off by wage demands.

There is no panic coming out of Liverpool right now regarding the future of Salah but as time goes by without a new contract being signed, speculation is going to grow about a potential move away from Anfield.

You only have to look at the situation at PSG with Kylian Mbappe. The French international is in the final six months of his deal and has made no secret of a desire to play for Real Madrid.

There have been reports of PSG offering Mbappe a short term contract, worth a considerable amount of money in a bid to avoid losing him for nothing.

From Liverpool’s perspective, one look at the situation of Emre Can and Georginio Wijnaldum show what can happen when a player is not offered what he believes he is worth. As time moved on without a deal being struck, both players started to look elsewhere and ultimately left the club for free.

The longer a new contract is not signed, the more desperate things will become for Liverpool as they attempt to keep Salah at Anfield.
