On Monday, the Champions League round of 16 draw took place at UEFA’s headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland. But not without controversy.
The initial draw was declared null and void due to a technical problem, meaning a second draw was required to determine the fixtures.
Here is the official draw in full.
- Red Bull Salzburg vs. Bayern Munich
- Sporting CP vs. Manchester City
- Benfica vs. Ajax
- Chelsea vs. Lille
- Atletico Madrid vs. Manchester United
- Villarreal vs. Juventus
- Inter Milan vs. Liverpool
- Paris Saint-Germain vs. Real Madrid
PSG’s clash with Real Madrid is undoubtedly the highest-profile tie of the round. Elsewhere, defending champions Chelsea were drawn against Lille, while Man City face Sporting.
The bookmakers have updated their odds for the Champions League winner following the draw. Let’s take a look at the favorites to lift the trophy in Saint Petersburg on May 28.
Having finished as runners-up last season, Pep Guardiola’s men will be desperate to go one better this time around.
Man City’s squad is stacked with world-class players in every department. The question is: can they finally break their Champions League hoodoo?
Bayern won the Champions League back in 2020, beating PSG 1-0 in the final. Needless to say, they have continued to dominate the Bundesliga since then.
The Bavarians came through the group stage with a 100% record, scoring a whopping 22 goals while conceding just three in the process. Unsurprisingly, Robert Lewandowski bagged nine.
Just like Bayern, Liverpool won all six of their group games – securing two victories over Atletico Madrid, Porto, and AC Milan to finish 11 points clear at the top of Group B.
Mohamed Salah has already notched 21 goals and nine assists in 22 outings across all competitions this term. If he carries on the way he’s going, he could fire the Reds to a second UCL title in four years.
Chelsea beat Man City in last season’s Champions League final. Since then, Thomas Tuchel has continued to transform the club into a winning machine.
Not only are the players one of the favourites to win the UCL, but they are also among the frontrunners to clinched the Premier League title. Can Tuchel work his magic once again?
The 2020 runners-up made it all the way to the semi-finals last season, but they were unable to end their lengthy wait for Champions League glory.
However, the arrival of Lionel Messi has given PSG an extra edge. If Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe can stay fit throughout the campaign, the Parians will almost certainly reach the latter stages.
