With Solskjaer Finally on His Way Out, Who Can Step into The Old Trafford Hot Seat?

Time has finally run out for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United. There were strong rumours the Norwegian was going to be dismissed following the embarrassment at home against Liverpool.

Solskjaer held on yet suffered another humiliating home defeat at the hands of local rivals Manchester City prior to the international break.

The Manchester United board had two weeks to consider what they were going to do but Solskjaer remained in charge for the match against Watford on Saturday, to the surprise of many fans.

However, the 4-1 defeat to Watford has signalled the end for Solskjaer and it is a shock he has lasted for so long following the thumping by Liverpool.

There are clearly huge problems behind the scenes at Manchester United. It should not have taken this long to make a decision everyone could see coming. It appeared as though Ed Woodward did not want to have to sack another one of his appointments prior to himself leaving his role at the club.

He chose to try and wait and that allowed Tottenham Hotspur, who acted quickly, to bring in Antonio Conte, a man who reportedly had his eye on the Manchester United job.

So, with the inevitable decision having been delayed for so long, where does that leave Manchester United in terms of appointing a new manager?

There are rumours Michael Carrick is going to survive and he could be partnered by Darren Fletcher on an interim basis. That is fine but it is fast becoming clear the Manchester United board do not have any idea who they are going to turn to for the future.

Brendan Rodgers has been linked with the job in recent weeks and he is sure to want to make the move from Leicester City to Old Trafford. Rodgers is an ambitious manager but he has connections with Liverpool, which will be used against him should things start going wrong at Manchester United.

Mauricio Pochettino continues to be linked with the job but Paris Saint-Germain sources have stated their head coach is going nowhere.

However, the Argentine may choose to leave after one season and a league title under his belt but that would mean Manchester United would have to risk not appointed a permanent manager for the remainder of this season.

Zinedine Zidane has consistently been touted as the next manager of Manchester United. The Frenchman knows what it takes to win trophies, having done so regularly at Real Madrid but there are concerns he does not take a hands on approach to coaching.

There is a belief the group of players at Old Trafford need a strong coach, rather than a good man-manager and therefore, Zidane may not fit the bill.

Zindane’s fellow Frenchman, Laurent Blanc, has been mentioned as a possible interim coach and Julen Lopetegui, the current manager of Sevilla has been linked with the full-time position.

Whoever comes in through the door has a massive job on their hands as the performance against Watford suggests Manchester United are in serious trouble.
