Nuno appointment could go either way for Tottenham

Nuno appointment could go either way for Tottenham
2270

Last week Tottenham ended their long search for a head coach by appointing former Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo as the successor to compatriot Jose Mourinho.

The north London club dispensed with the services of Mourinho ahead of last seasons League Cup, which they lost to Manchester City.

Tottenham have reportedly held talks with several head coaches, most notably Antonio Conte and Paulo Fonseca. However, after failing to agree on terms with the other coaches, they turned to Nuno.

The consensus among the Spurs fans seems to be that the former Valencia head coach is an underwhelming appointment.

Compared to Conte, he is as most head coaches are not at the level of the Italian, who last season guided Inter to their first Serie A title since 2010.

Nuno’s performance in his first three years as Wolves boss was impressive and offer Spurs fans hope, as he guided his team to promotion to the top-flight before back-to-back seventh-place finishes.

However, it all went wrong last season when his team finished 13th in the table.

It is important to state that the team from the Midlands were without star striker Raul Jimenez for a chunk of the campaign after the Mexican fractured his skull. That was a big factor in their struggles.

In his last season at Molineux, it just all seemed a bit stale and Nuno looked incapable of getting more out of his team.

Maybe it was a case of familiarity breeding content and maybe it is better to judge him on his first three seasons with Wolves.

A new challenge at a more high-profile club may be just what Nuno needs to rediscover the coaching acumen that he has shown in the past.

He did not seem to be Spurs’ first choice head coach and the appointment could go either way. It will be fascinating to see how the Portuguese boss does with the north London club and whether he is successful.
