The final of the most prestigious football tournament is finally here! After last year's German final, this time two teams, not just from one country, but also from one city - Madrid, face each other. Real Madrid is very close to their 10th title of the Champions League, while Atletico Madrid will try to win the trophy for the first time in their history.
Real failed to reach the top spot in La Liga for second consequtive year and therefore, the Champions League title seems more desirable than ever for them. The last time Real Madrid won the Champions League was in season 2001-02, and since then they do not impress with their performances in the tournament, despite spending so much money for players. Now, led by Carlo Ancelotti, with unarguably phenomenal players, a great opportunity opens before Real for that 10th title.
Ancelotti managed to preserve his most important players and this can be crucial for the outcome of the game. Atletico players, in turn, are on the verge of physical strength, which was clearly seen in the decisive match against Barcelona last week. In the direct La Liga title clash, Diego Costa and Arda Turan got injured, as the first will most likely miss the final on May 24. For Real, the biggest absent is Alonso, who is suspended.
Atletico Madrid are the only undefeated team in the Champions League this season. Diego Simeone and his players certainly earned the support of many football fans and in view of their performance throughout the season, this seems perfectly logical. Although, they don`t have the financial capacity of the dominant teams, Atletico managed to win La Liga title and reach the final of the Champions League.
As far as the statistics are concerned, Atletico Madrid have a great advantage in the final clashes with their local rivals, winning 4 of the last 5 finals against Real Madrid. On the other hand, "Los blancos" completely dominate in recent years in matches against Atletico, as Real haven`t been defeated in 29 of the last 30 such meetings. However, this season, the statistical indicators are in favor of Atletico.
Surely, we can expect one of the most exciting finals of the Champions League. Is Real Madrid finally going to triumph with the tenth title, or Atletico, for the first time ever, will reach this trophy, remains to be seen.
