Lazio Continue Push for Champions League Place

The final match of Serie A this weekend sees Lazio welcome Genoa to the Stadio Olimpico in Rome on Monday night.

The hosts will be hoping to continue their push towards a place in the Champions League for next season and with Inter Milan having been held at home by Crotone on Saturday, could pull away from their closest rivals for third place.

Genoa swill start the match in the bottom half of the table and still need points to secure their place in Serie A next season.  A win in this match would be a huge bonus and help ease their relegation worries.

Lazio have failed to win their last two matches in all competitions and will see this as the perfect fixture to get back to winning ways.  They lost 2-1 at AC Milan in Serie A last weekend and followed that up with a 0-0 draw in the semi-final first leg of the Coppa Italia against the same team at the San Siro.

It was a surprise to see Lazio fail to score in the second of those games and trends show they have scored an average of 2.59 goals per game in Serie A this season.  They are the top goal scorers in the league, with 5 goals more than the second-best team, Juventus.

At home, Lazio have won each of their last five games in all competitions and there have been over 2.5 goals in four of those matches.  Lazio have scored 17 goals across the five games and conceded only two.

Genoa come into this match having lost their last two league games.  There have been defeats at the hands of Juventus away and Udinese at home, both games ending 1-0.

Trends show Genoa have won three of their last eight games in all competitions and just one of their last eight away from home.  They have not been very entertaining to watch and have seen just 6 goals scored across their last seven matches.

Genoa have failed to score a goal in their last three away Serie A games and in twelve of their last sixteen on the road.  However, they have kept a clean sheet in four of their last five away league games and will be hoping to keep things tight in this match.

Team news and Lazio will be missing two key players as Senad Lulic and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic are both suspended.  That should mean a place in the starting XI for Felipe Anderson in midfield and Jordan Lukaku in defence.

Genoa also have a player missing due to suspension and Nicola Spolli will miss out, meaning a place in the defence for Luca Rossettini.  Midfielder Miguel Veloso is injured and Stephane Omeonga could be his replacement.

It’s difficult to see anything other than a Lazio win from this game. Genoa will attempt to frustrate the hosts but Lazio have been scoring goals for fun, especially at home and should make the breakthrough to claim maximum points.
