Atletico Madrid find themselves in the unfamiliar position of fifth in La Liga, as they welcome midtable Celta Vigo to the Vicente Calderon Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Atletico’s form in La Liga has improved of late as Diego Simeone’s side are now unbeaten in their last six games in the Spanish top-flight, recording four wins in the process.

The men from the Spanish capital currently are trailing city rivals and league leaders Real by seven points, while Los Blancos also have two games in hand. It seems that Atletico are unlikely to be challenging for the title this season.

Finishing in a Champions League spot will now be the priority for Simeone’s team, who are four points behind third-place Sevilla who occupy third and the last automatic qualification spot. However, they are just two points behind Real Sociedad who are fourth and occupy the Champions League qualification spot.

Atletico have rediscovered their defensive solidity of late in La Liga, keeping clean sheets in seven of their last nine matches. They also have a good record in front of goal against Celta, scoring two or more goals in eight of the last ten meetings in all competitions.

Celta Vigo currently sit in tenth in La Liga. However, they are not far off the top six and Europa League spots. Their league form has been decent of late, winning three of their last four La Liga games.

However, Celta’s away form in La Liga has been poor of late, as they have won just one of their last seven games on the road, which is a worrying statistic considering that Atletico have won 14 of their last 17 La Liga games at the Calderon.

Forebet predicts that Atletico will continue their recent decent form and record a win to boost their chances of Champions League football next season.
