Go Ahead Eagles vs Den Haag: A relegation six pointer

Go Ahead Eagles vs Den Haag: A relegation six pointer

Saturday sees ADO Den Haag travel to Go Ahead Eagles in the Eredivisie, in a match that that could have a big impact on the relegation zone come May.

Go Ahead Eagles currently sit dead bottom in the Dutch league, with 16 points from 21 games so far, while Den Haag sit just one point above them in 16th place. This game offers both teams the chance to climb out the relegation zone with a win, and both teams will be confident that they can come away with all three points.

Go Ahead Eagles have home advantage, but that hasn’t been enough for them to pick up points throughout large parts of the 2016/17 season, but it could serve them well against a team of a similar quality. Despite the numerous poor results that they have suffered, the majority of their points have been claimed at the De Adelaarshorst Stadion, having won three and drawn one of their 10 home matches.

Likewise, Hans de Koning’s side go into the game in better form. They have drawn two and won one of their last five matches, which is a promising turn of form for a club that had lost seven of their last eight prior to that run. They will be hopeful that they can keep their good run going and secure three more points, which could see them move out of the relegation zone for the first time since November.

However, Den Haag will be similarly optimistic, knowing that a victory could take them as high as 13th, which would ease some of the pressure on the struggling club.

They go into Saturday’s game having lost four consecutive fixtures. Despite a positive start, in which they won their first three games of the season, results have been poor ever since. They have now suffered defeat in eight of their last nine matches. However, changes have since been made at the club, with the hope of turning their season around.

Under-fire manager Zeljko Petrovic was dismissed on Tuesday and former Jong Ajax manager Fons Groenendijk was soon after announced as his replacement. He joins the host of new faces that joined the club throughout the January transfer market, such as Abdenasser el khayati, Randy Wolters, Donny Gorter and Abel Tamata.

They failed to make a difference in the 2-0 defeat to Vitesse Arnhem last weekend, but Groenendijk will be hopeful that he can get the best out of his new squad, starting with Saturday’s clash.
