City will provide more of a challenge for Barcelona

Two weeks ago Barcelona hammered Manchester City 4-0 at the Nou Camp. There were extenuating circumstances in the defeat, though. The biggest being former Barcelona ‘keeper Claudio Bravo experiencing a moment of madness by handling out his penalty box.

When the Chilean received his marching orders Barcelona were only one up. In truth, the Citizens were still in the game, even if the Catalan giants were still likely to come out on top.

The two teams go head-to-head once more on Tuesday night at the Etihad Stadium. The home side ended a six-match run without a win last time out with a 4-0 win at West Brom. Argentinian international Sergio Aguero has been in and out of City’s starting line-up of late but scored a brace against the Baggies.

Germany international Ilkay Gundogan also scored a brace against West Brom and looks to be back to his best for the Citizens. The win will have restored confidence among the City fans and players. It seems certain the Premier League leaders will not be such easy prey for the Catalan visitors.

Luis Enrique’s side won 1-0 against rock-bottom Granada on Saturday. However, the Spanish champions produced an unconvincing win. The Catalan giants are currently injury-hit with a number of key players likely to miss out for the Spanish champions, including Gerard Pique and Andres Iniesta.

The injuries coupled with the Catalan giant’s unconvincing form give Manchester City a real opportunity to end their record of five straight defeats against Barcelona in the Champions League.

If City can contain Barcelona’s fearsome strike force of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar, then the Citizens own attacking players can make their mark. The aforementioned Gundogan, Aguero, Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva can cause Barcelona serious problems.

With confidence restored at City, the Citizens will provide Barcelona with more of a challenge than their last clash. The challenge may even prove too much for the Catalan giants.
