Bayern Munich face tough test at Atletico Madrid
Atletico Madrid have become the David of the Champions League in recent years, slaying Goliaths of the European game. On Wednesday night Los Rojiblancos host German giants Bayern Munich at the Vicente Calderon on game week two of Europe’s elite competition.
Atletico have made a decent start to their La Liga campaign are currently sitting in third position behind perennial title challengers Barcelona and Real Madrid. Diego Simeone’s side are unbeaten this season and will be relishing the task of taking on the Bavarian giants on home soil.
For most teams the visit of Bayern would be a daunting prospect. The Bavarians have won all five of their Bundesliga games so far this season. Carlo Ancelotti’s team also started their European campaign off with a 5-0 home defeat of Rostov at the Allianz Arena.
They are a formidable team, especially going forward in the Champions League as they have scored two or more goals in eight of their last ten Champions League outings. They have also suffered just one defeat in their last nine Champions League games.
Their statistics would have been more impressive if it was not for Atleti, who were the only team to beat Bayern in that nine-game run and were also one of the teams that stopped Bayern from scoring two or more goals in last season’s competition.
Last season Simeone’s men followed-up knocking out compatriots Barcelona by beating Bayern in the semi-finals. A 1-0 win at the Vicente Calderon was followed by a 2-1 defeat in Munich, as the men from Madrid progressed via the away goals rule.
The key to Atletico’s good European record of late is their home record. Simeone’s side have won their last five ties at home without conceding a goal. No doubt everybody connected with the club would be happy with a repeat of last season’s 1-0 win.
Despite Bayern seemingly being in top form the Bavarian giants are unlikely to find Atletico easy opponents, as the Spaniards look to gain a win in their bid to top the group.
