Rodgers must prove his credentials in the Europe with Celtic
Nabbing Brendan Rodgers may have been a coup for Scottish giants Celtic, but the former Liverpool boss now has to prove his final season and a bit with the Reds was just a blip in his career.
No doubt the Hoops will cruise to their annual SPL title, as arch-rivals Rangers will take time to establish themselves again in the top-flight following promotion from the Championship.
It is in the Champions League that Rodgers needs to do his best work. The SPL champions have the chance to make it through to the group stages, as the Hoops face Israeli side Hapoel Beer-Sheva in the competition play-off.
Celtic have struggled in recent years to get to the group stages of the competition, never mind having an impact on the competition. The last time the Hoops made it to the group stages was in 2014, when they finished bottom of a group containing Barcelona, AC Milan and Ajax.
The last two seasons the Hoops have fallen at this stage of the competition, against Maribor and Malmo respectively. Celtic under Rodgers will be expecting better this season.
Hapoel Beer Sheva will not be easy opponents for the Scottish champions though, as the Israeli side pulled-off a major shock in the 3rd qualifying round by defeating Greek champions Olympiakos 1-0 on aggregate.
A club the size of Celtic needs a good European campaign or the season will fall flat. It may be nice for Celtic to win the Scottish title season after season, but the fans will be looking for some extra from their team under Rodgers.
If he can deliver him the Hoops produce decent results in Europe, then he will have gone some way to resurrecting his flagging reputation as boss.
