Germany could show their class against Slovakia

World champions Germany have enjoyed an underwhelming campaign at Euro 2016. A 2-0 victory against Ukraine in their opening game glossed over the fact Ukraine were still in the game until stoppage-time when Joachim Low’s team scored a second goal.

Their second group game against Poland they really struggled to produce anything going forward and failed to have a shot on target. If it had not been for a bad miss from Ajax striker Arkadiusz Milik then Die Mannschaft could have lost that game and finished second in their group.

However, the world champions moved up a gear slightly against Northern Ireland in their last group game. Only a fantastic display of keeping from Northern Ireland number one Michael McGovern kept the score down to 1-0.

The fact that Germany decided to use an orthodox striker in Mario Gomez, instead of using Mario Gotze as a false number nine no doubt helped Germany’s attacking play.

Gomez is nowhere near as technically gifted as Gotze, but he is a focal for the attack. That is what Low’s team were missing when they struggling to create chances against Poland.

Whether Gomez will be good enough to lead the world champions all the way remains doubtful. However, at least he was a threat and scored a goal against Northern Ireland.

Germany are a far better team and group of individuals than they have shown so far in France and hopefully that will be proven against a Slovakian team that is likely to defend for their lives.

Die Mannschaft more often than not start tournaments slowly and then get into their stride later on and this game could be the start of Low’s side displaying their true class.
