Switzerland v France a draw waiting to happen

Switzerland v France a draw waiting to happen

European neighbours Switzerland and France share a border and go head-to-head at Euro 2016 on Sunday night. Switzerland have enjoyed a solid, if unspectacular start to their campaign, with a win over Albania and a draw against Romania.

France meanwhile have left it late to beat both Romania and Albania, but have eventually prevailed against the underdogs of the group. As expected France and Switzerland are leading the group and a draw between the pair would see both through to the knockout stages.

A draw would be a highly creditable result for Switzerland, who will be regarded as underdogs heading into the clash in Lille. There may not be much difference in the world ranking between the pair, but in reality there is a slight gap in quality between the pair.

A draw would see France top the group and be given a slightly easier draw in the knockout stages, which was what was expected at the start of the campaign. Boss Didier Deschamps is likely to rotate his squad and team in this clash, as Les Bleus just need to avoid defeat.

It is difficult to see the host nation going all out to win this clash, when in reality all they need is a draw. Switzerland would be unlikely to admit it, but they probably would have taken finishing second place at the start of the competition.

In past tournaments teams have played out draws that have suited both teams. Neither team have extended themselves and threatened the opponent’s goal. There may just be an entrant cordial in this game and it is hard to see any other result than a draw.
