Germany will recover from shaky friendly results

World champions Germany open their Euro 2016 campaign on Sunday against Ukraine. Joachim Low’s side’s form has not been great. In fact they have not been in great shape ahead of the tournament.

Die Mannschaft have lost four of their last seven international outings and Low has a number of selection headaches. The Germans have struggled to find a replace for full-back Philip Lahm since he retired from international duty following World Cup 2014.

Germany are likely to start with Liverpool’s versatile Emre Can at right-back and FC Cologne’s Jonas Hector on the opposite. Can is a good player, but it is not ideal to have a specialist playing in every position.

Hector has won just 14 caps for his country and will be deputise by Benedikt Howedes, who is a centre-back, but played at left-back during the German’s successful World Cup last time out. The Germans also lack a top centre-back.

However, despite their flaws they are extremely strong elsewhere. The likes of Manuel Neuer, Toni Kroos, Thomas Muller and Jerome Boateng are all now regarded as top players in the European game.

The world champions seem to be able to turn it on when it matters most, at big international tournaments usually. Their team is highly-experienced and full of quality. Most of the squad play for club sides accustomed to winning games and silverware.

The Germans also have a number of young players in their squad, including highly-rated defender Joshua Kimmich and midfielders Julian Weigl, Julian Draxler and Leroy Sane.

Looking at the Germany squad it is a good mix of youth and experience and regardless of their preparations Die Mannschaft will always be a contender at a big tournament.
