Romania will not be an easy Euro 2016 opponent for France
The European Championships will kick-off on Friday with hosts France hosting Romania at the Stade De France. Footy predictions are that Les Bleus are heavy favourites to win their opener and kick-off the tournament with a victory.
That turn out to be true, but it is unlikely that Romania will be an easy side to beat. Romania were unbeaten in qualifying and had the best defence conceding a measly two goals. In fact Anghel Iordanescu’s team kept seven clean sheets in their last eight qualifiers.
To say the team’s strength lies in their defensive play would be an understatement. The centre-back pairing of former-Tottenham star Vlad Chiriches and Dragos Grigore form the foundation of that solid defensive record.
They will come to Paris to defend first and then hit France on the counter-attack. France does have a number of players capable of breaching that French back though. The hosts seem to be spoilt for choice when going forward.
If any team can break down the stubborn Romanians then it is France. The likes of Antoine Griezmann, Anthony Martial and Olivier Giroud supply the French with exciting forward options. Even without star striker Karim Benzema and Lyon’s prolific striker Alexander Lacazette looks highly dangerous.
That is without mentioning Juventus’ star midfielder Paul Pogba and West Ham’s mercurial playmaker Dimitri Payet, who are both extremely highly-rated.
An opening game for the hosts cannot be written-off, but it would be highly-surprising if Didier Deschamps team had a comfortable night in Saint Denis, as Romania have proven in qualifying they can be very hard to break down at the back.
