Sheffield United – Season Preview 2019/20
3109

Sheffield United are back in the big time following a twelve-year absence from the Premier League.

The Blades dropped down to the third-tier of English football in 2011 but have worked their way back up to battle with the country’s top clubs once again.

Do they have what it takes to compete in the top-flight, or will they be fighting for their lives in the most competitive league in the world?

Last season

Sheffield United finished second in the Championship – five points behind Norwich City – to secure automatic promotion to the Premier League last season.

Chris Wilder’s men went on a phenomenal run in the second half of the campaign which saw the club lose just twice in 24 matches.

Veteran striker Billy Sharpe top-scored with 23 league goals for the club last season while David McGoldrick chipped in with 15.

The club also boasted the joint-best defensive record in the Championship. Considering the level of their new opposition, they will need to perform even better at the back this term.

Next season

The Blades are the bookmakers’ favorite for relegation and they arguably have the weakest squad off all 20 Premier League clubs.

The team will need draw inspiration from last season’s overachievement and must believe that they can defy the odds once again.

Lys Mousset could prove to be a brilliant signing for Sheffield United. He has a wealth of experience at Premier League level having played 71 times for Bournemouth.

Wilder is likely to continue with the trusted pairing of Sharpe and McGoldrick up top however Mousset will be hot in their heels and pushing for a place in the starting eleven.

Former Manchester United midfielder Ravel Morrison has also been brought in and has the potential to shine next season if he can keep his temper in check.

Once hailed as a promising youngster, Morrison will be looking to reignite his career after unsuccessful spells abroad in Italy, Mexico and Sweden.

Sheffield United will need to continue with the right blend of defense and attack that saw them do so well in the Championship last season.
