Manchester United – Season Preview 2019/20
3687
Ever since the departure of long-standing manager Alex Ferguson in 2013, Manchester United have struggled to compete with the Premier League’s top clubs.
Following failed spells under David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is now at the helm and the former United striker has a monumental job on his hands.
Can the “baby-faced assassin” guide United back to the top once again, or will it be another season of disappointment at Old Trafford?
Last season
Manchester United finished sixth in the Premier League last season; 32 points behind rivals and champions Manchester City.
Jose Mourinho began the campaign in charge but after just seven wins in the first 17 league games, the Portuguese was sacked in December and Solskjaer was brought in as his replacement.
Following Solskjaer’s appointment, the club won six consecutive Premier League matches but a poor end to the season saw United fail to win any of their last five league games.
Paul Pogba, Alexis Sanchez and many of the club’s other top earners were below-par throughout the campaign and their performances will need to drastically improve if United are to better last season’s sixth place finish.
Next season
This will be Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first full season in charge of Manchester United but you have to wonder how much time he will be given if things don’t go according to plan.
As a former Old Trafford hero, he may be given a little more leeway than his predecessors however a club of Manchester United’s stature doesn’t settle for second best.
With constant uncertainty surrounding Paul Pogba’s future, Solskjaer will be keen to get the issue resolved as soon as possible in order to settle his side before the start of the season.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka was outstanding for Crystal Palace last season and the right-back will be a fantastic addition to the squad. However, both Wan-Bissaka and fellow new-comer Daniel James may take some time to settle in and adapt to life at Old Trafford.
Everybody involved with the club will be hoping for some stability after a number of turbulent seasons and a win against Chelsea on the first day of the new campaign will no doubt settle any pre-season nerves.

Predicted league finish
The predicted league finish for Manchester United is 6th. It’s difficult to imagine the club breaking into the top four this time around. The squad still requires major redevelopment before it can challenge the country’s top sides once again.
