Alexander Isak: More Than Just Goals for Newcastle United

Alexander Isak: More Than Just Goals for Newcastle United

Newcastle United have had an up and down season. They failed to reach either final of the domestic cups and were knocked out of the Champions League in the group stage.

The team is also likely to finish outside of the Champions League qualification places this season.

With the influx of money from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, Newcastle were supposed to vault to the top of the Premier League.

Yet, under the management of Eddie Howe, the team has gone backwards in 2023-24.

One player has shown consistency this season, and that is striker Alexander Isak. His recent goal against Everton was evidence of everything that makes him a special player, but his impact stretches far beyond just finding the back of the net.

Isak's goal against Everton showcased his speed and composure in front of goal. From the darting run between defenders to the deft finish past the goalkeeper, every aspect of the goal was pure "Isak."

What sets Isak apart is his ability to create opportunities for himself. He doesn't rely on others to set him up. He instead takes matters into his own hands with his dribbling skills and vision.

This self-sufficiency is a rare quality in modern strikers, and it adds another dimension to his game.

His goal tally speaks volumes about his scoring prowess, but going deeper into the statistics reveals Isak’s all-around impact on the pitch for Newcastle.

Isak leads Newcastle in goals with 15 this season. No other Newcastle player has more than nine goals. Isak is a pure goal scorer, a No. 9, and his one assist is evidence of that.

The striker doesn’t set up teammates in the same way as Darwin Nunez or Erling Haaland. Yet, his impact on the pitch is the same as the two previously mentioned Premier League forwards.

With his recent goal scoring streak, Isak finds himself among the top scorers in the Premier League. He could even hit the 20-goal mark.

Not many Newcastle forwards in the last 20 seasons scored 20 goals in the Premier League.

This versatility has been invaluable for Newcastle, especially amid a season plagued by injuries. Isak's compatibility with different teammates has ensured a degree of stability in the team's performance, even in the face of adversity.

Unfortunately for Newcastle, with the club needing to fall in line with Financial Fair Play, they may need to sell players in the summer.

Isak's stellar form has attracted attention from elsewhere, with reports linking him with a move away from St. James' Park.

If Isak was sold in the offseason, it would be another step backwards for Newcastle. The club needed a striker of Isak’s quality for years. Losing him would be further evidence that the Magpies can’t buy success domestically or on the continent – at least not yet.
