Borussia Dortmund and Newcastle United are locked on four points in Group F ahead of their UEFA Champions League showdown at Signal Iduna Park on Tuesday.
A fortnight ago, Dortmund claimed a 1-0 victory over Newcastle at St. James’ Park, blowing the so-called “group of death” wide open.
With Paris Saint-Germain leading Dortmund and Newcastle by two points – and AC Milan trailing by two points – Tuesday’s clash looks set to have a big impact on the standings.
Borussia Dortmund head into Matchday 4 on the back of a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of arch-rivals Bayern Munich, with Harry Kane netting a hat-trick in the rout.
Following a 3-3 draw with Eintracht Frankfurt and a 1-0 defeat to Hoffenheim, BVB enter Tuesday’s showdown on a three-game winless run across all competitions.
In the Champions League, Dortmund suffered a 2-0 defeat to PSG before recording a goalless draw against Milan, but they managed to bounce back against Newcastle.
Having kept a clean sheet in each of their previous three Champions League home games, Borussia Dortmund will be confident of avoiding defeat on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Newcastle United claimed a 1-0 victory over Arsenal last weekend, courtesy of a controversial goal from Anthony Gordon.
Thanks to a 3-0 victory over Manchester United in the EFL Cup last week, the Magpies will go in search of a third successive victory on Tuesday.
Eddie Howe’s men kicked off their Champions League campaign with a goalless draw against Milan before thrashing PSG 4-1 at St. James’ Park on Matchday 2.
When you look at the bigger picture, Newcastle have lost just one of their previous 12 matches across all competitions, keeping eight clean sheets in the process.
Head-to-head: Dortmund and Newcastle met for the very first time a fortnight ago, with the German side winning the reverse fixture 1-0.
Despite racking up 61% possession and 12 shots on home soil, Howe’s men failed to make the most of their dominance and were made to pay.
Team news: The hosts will be without injured forward Julien Duranville (thigh) for the foreseeable future, while Emre Can (thigh) remains a doubt for Tuesday.
As for Newcastle, Sandro Tonali is suspended, with Elliot Anderson, Harvey Barnes, Sven Botman, Alexander Isak and Matt Target sidelined through injury.
Although Dortmund claimed all three points at St James’ Park, Newcastle proved that they can compete with the German outfit.
Forebet predicts that Borussia Dortmund and Newcastle United will play out a low-scoring draw this time around, with both teams netting under 1.5 goals.
