After a stunning loss to Tottenham Hotspur last weekend, Liverpool are back at Anfield for their first Europa League game on home soil with the Reds playing hosts to Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise.
Liverpool suffered their first loss of the season last weekend after a defeat in north London to Tottenham. However, the game was marred in complete controversy.
Firstly, Curtis Jones was sent off for a questionable red card after initially being handed a red, as Diogo Jota also received his marching orders in the second half.
Both will, however, be able to play in this game, given how suspensions in the Premier League don’t run through to continental matches.
Despite this, the biggest controversy was Luis Diaz’s goal that was ruled out for offside although images clearly proved he was onside.
Cody Gakpo was the only goalscorer for the Reds that day, as an own goal from Joel Matip secured the first loss of the season in all competitions for Jurgen Klopp’s men.
Prior to this loss, Liverpool did win three games in a row with a 3-1 scoreline, defeating LASK in their first Europa League match in six seasons with the home side taking the lead early on that day.
However, Darwin Nunez soon scored from the penalty spot before goals from Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah sealed a group stage win.
They also defeated West Ham United 3-1 back in the Premier League before doing the same to Leicester City in the EFL Cup.
As for Union SG, they have continued their sensational rise up the Belgian Pro League ranks and currently sit top of the table in the Belgian Pro League on goals scored.
Gent are level on points with them, while Union SG have also managed to lose two games in the league already but win the most with six.
Recent results have seen them defeat Cercle Brugge 2-0, RWDM 3-2 before a 3-1 win over Charleroi since that 2-0 defeat to Genk back in mid-September.
The Belgian Pro League leaders drew their first game in Group E with a 1-1 draw at home to French side Toulouse. Mohamed Amoura was the hero that day with a goal in the 69th minute of the game.
For this game back at Anfield for the first time in a long time for a Europa League setting, Liverpool should be comfortable winners in the end.
Forebet predicts the Reds to win and over 2.5 goals.
