Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez is flying high for the Reds ahead of Sunday’s Premier League title clash against Manchester City. Nunez scored five goals in his last four matches in all competitions.

Thursday night’s two-goal performance against Sparta Prague in the Europa League last 16 showed his continued development on Merseyside.

Nunez now has 16 goals in 39 matches in all competitions this season.

He also has 11 assists to go along with those 16 goals. The Uruguayan has been involved in 27 of Liverpool’s goals this term.

Only Mohamed Salah has been involved in more goals for Liverpool in the Premier League this season. Salah has been involved with 24 goals and assists combined.

Nine months ago, many football fans claimed Nunez was a bust and that Liverpool should get rid of him.

Yes, the striker disappointed some fans last season and should have scored more goals this term, he has shown his quality in vital moments.

Nunez scored 15 goals and tallied four assists last season in 42 appearances.

The striker has now surpassed last season’s goal-scoring figure and has plenty of time to add to the number. He averages a goal every 139 minutes in all competitions.

Liverpool would not be top of the league ahead of Sunday’s match against Manchester City had Nunez not come off the bench in August and scored twice late in the match to defeat Newcastle.

Had Nunez not scored a 99th-minute goal against Nottingham Forest a week ago, Liverpool would have dropped two valuable points.

The striker, despite the misses this term, is showing exactly why top-level strikers are so valuable.

Nunez is just three goals behind Salah in the Liverpool goal scoring charts. He could overtake the Egyptian and finish as the club’s top scorer.

If Nunez does surpass Salah in scoring, it could also mean the Uruguayan overtakes the likes of Erling Haaland in the Premier League Golden Boot charts.

Haaland, a player Nunez has been compared to since joining Liverpool, has 18 league goals.

The two strikers will face off at Anfield and both will have the chance to lead their team to a significant win in the title race.

A loss for either team won’t put them out of the title race. But it will make it very difficult to win the trophy.

Nunez is likely to start along with Luis Diaz and Salah. He will have plenty of chances to get onto the scoresheet.

Sunday’s game will be Nunez’s sixth match against Man City. He has scored one goal and assisted one previous versus City. He could lead Liverpool to a win.
