The Greatest Final Round Fixtures in EPL History
556

There have been many memorable moments on the final day of the English Premier League season. It is impossible for all matches in the final round of fixtures to have something riding on them but occasionally, we get a game to remember.

A prime example is when Manchester City hosted Queens Park Rangers in 2012 in what was a tremendous final round fixture in the Premier League.

Manchester United were beating Sunderland 1-0 on the final day of the season and Manchester City knew they needed to beat QPR to win the title.

Manchester City opened the scoring against QPR, who were in a relegation battle with Bolton Wanderers. However, QPR struck back in the second half and having equalised they took as shock 2-1 lead in the 66th minute.

As the match entered added time, Manchester United fans thought they had secured the title but Eden Dzeko scored in the 92nd minute to level things up and Sergio Aguero wrote his name into Manchester City history by scoring the winning goal 2 minutes later.

Manchester City lifted the Premier League trophy and thanks to Bolton’s defeat, QPR avoided relegation.

Fast forward a decade and we come to the final day of the 2021/22 season, with Manchester City and Liverpool competing for the title. Manchester City hosted Aston Villa leading by 1 point and had to match or better Liverpool’s result to win the title.

Liverpool legend, Steven Gerrard was manager of Aston Villa and saw his team open the scoring in the 37th minute and double their advantage with only 21 minutes left on the clock. What followed was extraordinary as Manchester City scored 3 goals in the space of 5 minutes to win the match.

The goals came in the 76th, 78th, and 81st minutes and quickly silenced the crowd at Anfield, who briefly thought Liverpool were going to win the league.

Going into the final day of the 1993/94 Premier League season, Everton knew they needed to win and hope other results went their way to avoid relegation.

The Toffees hosted Wimbledon and the game quickly got away from them as the visitors took a 2-0 lead inside the first 20 minutes. Graham Stuart got one back for Everton following the award of a dubious penalty in the 24th minute and they equalised in the 67th minute thanks to a stunning volley by Barry Horne.

With under 10 minutes remaining, Stuart popped up with his second goal of the match to seal a 3-2 win for Everton, which was good enough to see them stay up.

In 2013, West Bromwich Albion hosted Manchester United in what was Sir Alex Ferguson’s final game in charge of the Red Devils. There was nothing riding on the match as Manchester United had sealed the title and WBA were in the top half.

The Red Devils raced into a 3-0 lead in the first half and were winning 5-2 with less than 10 minutes to go in Ferguson’s final game. However, WBA scored 3 goals in five minutes to claim a draw in what was one of the most chaotic final day fixtures in EPL history.
