Blackburn Rovers – Season Preview 2019/20
2314

Blackburn haven’t featured in the Premier League since 2011/12 and have dropped down to English football’s third-tier in that time.

Rovers are back in the Championship now and the fans are eager for a chance to compete in the top-flight once again.

The club won the Premier League title in 1994/95 but there is a lot of work to be done before Blackburn will be able to challenge the top sides in the country once again.

Last season

Following the club’s promotion from League One the season before, Blackburn finished the 2018/19 campaign in 15th place in the Championship.

Rovers home form was impressive but it was their performances on the road that ultimately let them down.

Blackburn recorded 10 home wins last season with a goal difference of +11.

In stark contrast, their poor away form saw them lose 12 of their 23 away games while registering a goal difference of –16.

Next season

If manager Tony Mowbray can improve his side’s away record, it will go a long way towards trying to surpass last season’s 15th place finish.

The signings of Bradley Johnson and Stewart Downing look to be impressive when you consider both players’ experience at this level.

The acquisition of striker Sam Gallagher from Southampton will also excite Rovers fans. Having showed promise throughout various loan spells in recent years, this could be the season that the 23-year-old finally settles and scores consistent goals.

Bradley Dack was the club’s top scorer last season however the midfielder will be keen to have a striker at the club who can also chip in with goals.

Ultimately, competition for places is something that the squad has needed for a long time and this will only benefit performances on the pitch.

Blackburn begin the new campaign with a home match against newly promoted Charlton Athletic. A convincing win in their season opener will do the team a world of good.
