Can Free-Flowing Leeds Leapfrog Leicester and Win the Championship?

Not so long ago, Leicester City looked destined to win the Championship at a canter. All of a sudden, Leeds United find themselves just six points behind the Foxes with 12 games remaining.

While Leicester remain the bookies’ favourites to claim the title, Leeds appear to have their name of the second automatic promotion place. But could the Whites go one better?

Thanks to a 3-1 victory over title rivals Leicester at Elland Road, Leeds are currently enjoying a nine-game winning streak in the Championship.

Daniel Farke’s men have won each of their last four matches by at least two goals, scoring over 2.5 goals in five of their previous nine league outings.

It is also worth noting that Leeds’ nine-game winning run features seven clean-sheet victories, with a measly two goals conceded during that period.

When you consider those statistics, it’s no surprise that Leeds boast the best defensive record in the division.

Having conceded just 27 goals in 34 encounters, the Whites average 0.79 goals against per game this season, with goalkeeper Illan Meslier possessing a 46.9% clean sheet ratio.

At the opposite end of the pitch, Farke’s men have been scoring goals for fun. In fact, only three teams have netted more Championship goals than Leeds this term.

Having bagged 15 goals and eight assists in 31 appearances, Crysencio Summerville sits third on the goal involvements leaderboard.

Georginio Rutter and Daniel James also find themselves in the top 10. Rutter has racked up six goals and 13 assists, while James has notched 10 goals and six assists.

In terms of the entire season, Leeds have lost just six of their 34 Championship matches, picking up 22 wins and six draws along the way.

Only Leicester have claimed more victories than Farke’s side, while only Ipswich Town have suffered fewer defeats.

It is also worth pointing out that Leicester have stuttered in recent weeks, losing each of their last two matches, with three defeats coming in their previous eight.

The Whites’ next league game is against Huddersfield Town, who find themselves 19th in the table – 35 points behind Leeds and only two points outside the relegation zone.

Of course, closing the gap on Leicester won’t be easy. But if Leeds carry on the way they’re going, they could overtake the Foxes and win the Championship.
