Who Could be the Surprise Package of the Season After the First Few Games

We’re a few weeks down already in the 2023/24 season and with an array of upsets so far and some top sides like Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain struggling, we take a look at some teams who could spring an upset this season.

Monaco

Monaco are top of the table with two wins and seven goals scored already, and with Wissam Ben Yedder scoring three goals in this time alongside two from Takumi Minamino, the club are looking good early on.

At the same time, PSG have scored just one goal in two games, failed to win a match and are without Lionel Messi and Neymar now.

What’s more, runners-up Lens have looked shocking after two gameweeks and sides like Lille, Rennes and Marseille who all got in the top five last season have seen some of their best players depart this summer.

Rayo Vallecano

It’s the third campaign in a row for Rayo Vallecano in La Liga, and after finishing inside the top 12 for the past two campaigns, they have started their season in sensational style.

The club came back into La Liga in 2021/22 and up until the wheels came off their season around February time, they were challenging for a spot in the European positions and even as high as fourth towards the end of January that campaign.

However, just five wins in the final 15 games of the season dropped them down into 12th, but Vallecano would return to action with a spot in 11th a year later.

This time around, the Madrid outfit are up into second and only behind their city rivals Real Madrid on goals difference with them being the only team alongside Barcelona yet to concede a goal.

What’s more, with the likes of Villarreal taking a hit this season and with clubs like Mallorca and Osasuna proving there are clear openings into a battle for Europe last season, Vallecano could put together a run to the top six.

Brighton

Although not a surprise based on their sensational season last year, Brighton & Hove Albion could still go above expectations once more after a brutal transfer window saw them lose arguably their two best players, Moises Caicedo and Alexis Mac Allister.

Because the Seagulls continue to find these gems across the world, they lose them to bigger clubs in forthcoming transfer windows.

However, this doesn’t seem to have stopped them at all and Roberto De Zerbi continues to prove why they are arguably the fastest-growing club across Europe’s top five leagues.

They could challenge for the top four this season after scoring eight goals in two games.

Tottenham Hotspur

Fear spread across north London when Tottenham Hotspur lost Harry Kane, but it has scored four goals in two games and looked excellent in attack in their draw with Brentford and win over Manchester United.

With James Maddison and under the guidance of Ange Postecoglou, they could put together a run back to the top four.
