World Cup Round-Up (Day 5) – Ronaldo Helps Portugal Edge Ghana Before Brazil Beat Serbia

Five-time champions Brazil opened their 2022 World Cup account on Day 5, but not before Portugal got the better of Ghana in a five-goal thriller. Naturally, Cristiano Ronaldo had a big say in the outcome of that clash.
Switzerland and Cameroon kicked off Day 5, while Uruguay and South Korea produced the fourth goalless draw of the tournament. Now that we’ve seen all 32 teams, let’s look back at Thursday’s action.
Solid Switzerland Secure 1-0 Win Over Cameroon
Thursday’s opening game saw Switzerland take on Cameroon at Al-Janoub Stadium. Although both sides created plenty of chances in the first half, they went into the break without anything to show for their efforts.
Less than three minutes after the restart, however, Breel Embolo scored what proved to be the only goal of the game. Believe it or not, Embolo was born in the Cameroon – meaning he scored against the country of his birth!
Uruguay and South Korea Play Out Goalless Stalemate
Uruguay and South Korea managed just a single shot on target between them throughout the entire 90 minutes at Education City Stadium. Unfortunately, Uruguay’s only attempt on target failed to produce a goal.
Both sides came close to finding the back of the net, with Federico Valverde’s long-range effort crashing off the post in the second half. However, the teams were forced to settle for a point apiece.
Portugal Survive Late Scare to Overcome Ghana
Five goals in 24 second-half minutes lit up Portugal’s clash with Ghana. Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring after winning and converting a penalty, but Andre Ayew equalized for Ghana eight minutes later.
Goals from Joao Felix and Rafael Leao gave Portugal a 3-1 lead before Osama Bukari pulled a goal back on 89 minutes. Remarkably, Ghana had a golden opportunity to snatch a point in the dying seconds – only for Inaki Williams to slip at the vital moment.
Richarlison Inspires Brazil to Victory Over Serbia
In the final match of the day, Serbia managed to keep Brazil quiet until the 62nd minute. Richarlison steered home a close-range finish following Vinicius Junior’s saved effort, giving the five-time champions the lead.
11 minutes later, Richarlison double his and Brazil’s tally for the night – scoring a sublime volley to send Lusail Stadium crazy. The Brazilians certainly deserved the win, having racked up 59% possession and 22 shots.
