The Championship has been home to some incredible goalscorers over the years, but Brentford’s Ivan Toney is arguably the most prolific.
In fact, with six games left to play this term, the Bees striker needs just two more goals to break Glenn Murray’s record for most goals scored in a single Championship season.
Before we go any further, let’s take a quick look at the highest scoring season in Championship history and see where Toney ranks on the list.
As you can see, Toney has already surpassed Chris Wood, Rickie Lambert, Jordan Rhodes and Ross McCormack on the leaderboard.
The 25-year-old currently sits level with Norwich City’s Teemu Pukki on 29 goals, with six matches remaining this season.
Glenn Murray netted 30 Championship goals for Crystal Palace back in 2012/13, although Toney looks set to break that record before the end of the campaign.
Having spent the majority of his career in League One and League Two, 2020/21 is Toney’s first season in the second tier of English football.
Still, the Brentford striker has adapted to the Championship seamlessly, bagging 29 goals in 39 games, along with ten assists.
Alongside braces against Preston North End, Coventry City, Sheffield Wednesday and Middlesbrough, Toney notched a hat-trick against Wycombe Wanderers.
Pukki is having another hugely successful campaign with Norwich, scoring 25 goals in the Canaries’ push for promotion.
Blackburn’s Adam Armstrong (21) and Reading’s Lucas Joao (19) have also been scoring goals for fun this season.
However, there is absolutely no denying that Toney deserves to win the Championship Golden Boot this term.
The Bees currently find themselves third in the Championship table, nine points outside the automatic promotion spots.
Given that Brentford sit seven points inside the play-off places, we could well see Toney setting the Premier League alight next season.
