Three of the eight teams that line-up for the Quarter-Finals of the League Cup this season have never won the competition before. Between them, Stoke, Tottenham, Man Utd, Arsenal and Man City have won the League Cup on 19 occasions, but Everton, Brentford and Newcastle have never lifted this trophy before.

We’re going to take a closer look at the three teams that haven’t won the League Cup before, assessing their seasons so far and their chances of getting their hands on the trophy this season.

Everton

The Toffees are a club steeped in history, yet the League Cup has proved impossible to win. Everton have been to the League Cup Final twice before, in 1977 and 1984, losing to Aston Villa and later Liverpool.

This season, under the guidance of Carlo Ancelotti, Everton are performing very well and look like a team that could go on to claim silverware. Dominic Calvert-Lewin top scores with 14-goals in all competitions and the new midfield trio of Allan, Doucoure and James have given the team much more balance than they had last season. Everton have struggled to keep clean sheets this season, though they have looked stronger in defence lately.

Man Utd have already beaten the Toffees at Goodison Park this season but with both teams in good form, this cup tie could go either way.

Furthest they can go: Final

Brentford

Championship side Brentford have never won a top division title or cup in their 131-year history, but the fact that they have the home advantage against Newcastle will give the underdogs a huge boost.

The Bees are performing well this season and current occupy 6th position in the Championship table. Striker, Ivan Toney, has been outstanding since joining the club from Peterborough in 2020, netting 15-goals in 20 appearances, and is a former Newcastle player.

Brentford certainly have enough firepower to get through this Quarter-Final tie against Premier League side Newcastle United, but it is hard to see them getting any further if they come up against Tottenham, Man City, Man Utd or Everton in the Semi-Finals.

Furthest they can go: Semi-Final

Newcastle United

The Magpies have won league titles and FA Cups in their past, but the last time that happened was way back in 1955. Newcastle have never made it through to the League Cup Final before but are one of the two Premier League teams to be drawn against lower league opposition and should be looking to take full advantage.

Callum Wilson has settled into life in the North East very nicely, scoring 8-goals in 12 appearances. Newcastle themselves have performed averagely this season, with some fans questioning the ability of manager Steve Bruce. The club sit 14th in the table and will fancy their chances of progressing through to the Semi-Finals, but whoever goes through with them would likely be happy to face the Toon Army if it’s an all Premier League affair in the last four.
