Will AC Milan end their 10-year drought in Serie A?
2508

With 10-games played, by the majority of teams in Serie A this season, AC Milan top the table and for the first time in a long time, look like genuine title contenders.

I Rossoneri last claimed the Serie A title a decade ago but under Stefano Pioli they finally look ready to lift the title for the 19th time.

Stefano Pioli was a surprise choice for the AC Milan hot seat when he took control in 2019, as he used to manage local-rivals Inter Milan.

Originally signed on a very short term deal, Pioli was seen almost as a caretaker manager until AC Milan could sign someone more permanent in the summer. However, after impressing the AC Milan hierarchy, Pioli earned a new 2-year deal at the club.

Stefano Pioli has guided AC Milan to eight wins from their opening ten league games, picking up two draws along the way. Only AC Milan and Juventus are yet to taste defeat in Serie A this season and the longer this unbeaten run continues, the more AC Milan fans will believe they have a chance of ending their 10-year baron spell in Serie A.

Veteran Romanian goalkeeper Ciprian Tatarusanu has joined the club from Lyon as competition for first-choice keeper, Gianluigi Donnarumma. Experienced centre-back, Simon Kjaer joined the club permanently after a successful loan spell.

Youngsters Alexis Saelemaekers and Jens Petter Hauge have been brought in from Anderlecht and Bodo/Glimt for small fees.

AC Milan haven’t had much money to spend over the summer, which only goes to highlight the excellent work being done by Stefano Pioli. Enigmatic forward, Zlatan Ibrahimovic continues to defy the odds by performing at the highest level aged 39. The Swedish icon has played in six league games for AC Milan this season, netting an impressive 10 goals.

Frank Kessie has also played a key role in the heart of the midfield for the Italians, playing 17 times in all competitions and even chipping in with 4-goals. Kessie’s performances have alerted Premier League sides and AC Milan are planning new contract talks with the Ivorian soon.

Local rivals, Inter Milan, occupy second place in Serie A as things stand, with AC enjoying a 5pt cushion over Lukaku and co. Juventus might be the only other unbeaten side in Serie A, but even with Cristiano Ronaldo amongst the ranks, the Turin club sit fourth in the table.

AC Milan have the second-best defensive record in the league behind Juventus and Verona, who have conceded 8-goals. The league leaders have netted 23-goals so far this season and their attack has only being outscored by Inter Milan (26) and Napoli (24).

If AC Milan can keep Ibrahimovic as fit as possible then surely they will be right up there at the end of the season, but there is still a long way to go to end their Serie A drought.
