On Saturday, reigning Italian champions Juventus produced arguably one of the most sensational stories of the summer by appointing former player Andrea Pirlo as their new head coach after the sacking of the experienced Maurizio Sarri.
Sarri was not everybody’s cup of caffè e latte at the Italian club and when the Bianconeri exited the Champions League at the hands of the French side, Lyon, he was a dead man walking when it came to his employment in Turin.
The appointment of Pirlo as head coach is a fascinating one. The former midfield maestro had just two weeks ago been appointed as Juve’s under-23 head coach. It was set to be his first managerial role within the game.
His appointment as the clubs under-23 boss was met with the kind of hysteria usually saved for the introduction of a first-team coach.
The clubs big brass was present to see Pirlo take his first steps into management and if successful likely eventually take his place in the first-team dugout. That eventually quickly became instantly take his place in the Bianconeri dugout on Saturday, as the 41-year-old signed a two-year deal with the club from Turin.
For Pirlo, it was an opportunity that he could not turn down. However, it was a massive gamble from the Bianconeri’s hierarchy to appoint a rookie head coach. Juventus will likely remain the dominant force in the Italian game and will probably claim their tenth straight Scudetto, as it is simply what they do.
The big challenge for the new boss is to win the Champions League. Europe’s elite competition has become the holy grail for Juventus. The Italian giants are desperate to turn their domestic dominance into tangible European success.
They have been down the road of employing an experienced coach in their attempts for European glory, now they are going down the rookie route. Only time will tell if Pirlo is as good a coach as he was a player. Whatever happens, it is a fascinating appointment from a club so desperate for European success.
