Liverpool’s Premier League title win not undermined by COVID-19

Liverpool’s Premier League title win not undermined by COVID-19
2430

Since the Premier League instituted a hiatus to the season in mid-March, one of the common cries from fans, coaches, players, and club executives has been to void the 2019-20 season.

Such an act would nullify everything that happened including Liverpool’s remarkable record that gave them a 25-point lead over Manchester City heading into the restart. Liverpool go into the Premier League restart needing just six points to win the division.

Depending on Manchester City’s results go on Wednesday night versus Arsenal, the Reds could lift the title with a win versus Everton on Sunday.

The Cityzens’ title reign is nearly over and it hasn’t gone down well with supporters. Ironically, the very Manchester City supporters whose club is under a potential Champions League ban for two years due to financial doping, are claiming that Liverpool’s title win is unjust due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Yes, the supporters of Manchester City, a team that cooked the books to cheat UEFA and win Premier League titles, claim that Liverpool deserve an asterisk next to their title win in 2019-20.

It is a remarkable claim that a number of Manchester City supporters have made as they prepare to find out their fate in terms of the Champions League this week from the CAS.

The Premier League has already stated no retrospective action will be taken against the Cityzens for their title wins, which in the case of the 2018-19 championship, would go to Liverpool instead.

The fact that Liverpool have gone about winning the title in dominant fashion while staying in line with Financial Fair Play and not being helped by VAR – as it was believed they would be – shows just how brilliant they have been.

It has been Manchester City and their supporters who have cried foul at VAR over the last two seasons in the Champions League and Premier League.

The very same supporters who believed Liverpool were being gifted beneficial treatment without VAR changed their tune as soon as replay began punishing Manchester City according to the laws of the game.

Forget the handball/no handball call on Trent Alexander-Arnold when the teams met previously this season. Manchester City’s claims of VAR punishing them for no good reason started early in the campaign against Tottenham Hotspur in match which saw them drop points.

To say Liverpool’s title was undeserved shows ignorance and jealousy. Liverpool are 25 points ahead of Manchester City heading into matchday 30 – that could be cut to 22 depending on Manchester City’s game in hand.

The Reds have posted a 27W-1D-1L record scoring 66 goals and conceding 21 times. They have allowed 10 fewer goals than Manchester City while scoring two fewer goals. The title has all come with practically the same squad as last season as no significant transfer was added last summer.

Liverpool are unbeaten at home, 15W-0D-0L, posting a 40-goals scored and 12 conceded record. Away from Anfield Liverpool have a 12W-1D-1L record and have conceded the fewest goals (nine).

The Reds are well worth their title and if anyone wants an asterisk put next to the 2019-20 Premier League championship, then each one of Manchester City’s titles needs one too.

Yet, while Liverpool’s title would have an asterisk due to a worldwide pandemic that affected millions, Manchester City’s mark would be for breaking FFP rules for spending billions and cheating Europe’s football governing body.
