The whole football world has been brought to a standstill by the COVID-19 pandemic. It is difficult to escape the virus and talk about it.

However, countries around the world are making plans to restart their season 2019/20. One of those is the Premier League.

The UK government and Premier League seem desperate for the league to return to action and conclude the campaign. However, many barriers need to be overcome before action can restart. The campaign to return to season 2019/20 has been labelled ‘Project restart’.

The problem for the English top-flight is that it’s return hinges on the UK government’s decision on whether they are set to ease restrictions. The country has been in lockdown for close to six weeks.

There are reports that the government are likely to extend the lockdown by a further three weeks, which has been the normal period set so far by the government. UK prime minister Boris Johnson will announce on Sunday the plans to ease out of lockdown now that the reported peak has passed.

An extension would delay the Premier League’s plans for a return in the first few weeks of June. Some clubs have returned to training while sticking to strict social distancing rules. However, some clubs have not, which would delay a return, as players would need to be at a good level of fitness to play the game.

If the Premier League does return in the near future then the games will be behind closed doors at a limited number of stadiums, reportedly 8-10 neutral arenas.

While there are plans for a return, at the moment there are big doubts about whether season 2019/20 will conclude.

It is a big task to get the campaign back on and the main concern must be health and well-being, which if it is not then the season must be curtailed.
