The stats that prove Jamie Vardy is the deadliest striker in England’s top four tiers

The stats that prove Jamie Vardy is the deadliest striker in England’s top four tiers
2070

Despite finishing as Leicester City’s top scorer in each of the past four seasons, Jamie Vardy has never won a Premier League Golden Boot.

The speedy striker fired the Foxes to the title back in 2015/16, and many believed that Vardy would prove to be a one-season wonder. But since then, Vardy has gone from strength to strength.

Before the unexpected break in the season due to COVID-19, the 33-year-old was arguably in the form of his life.

Vardy currently sits at the top of the Premier League goalscoring charts – two clear of Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – and is on course to claim his first-ever Golden Boot.

Of course, it’s unclear if and when the campaign will resume, and nobody is quite sure how things will pan out. But the table below proves that Jamie Vardy deserves to win this season’s Golden Boot award.

BEST SHOT CONVERSION RATES IN ENGLAND’S TOP FOUR TIERS (2019/20)

PLAYER

SHOT CONVERSION RATE

Jamie Vardy – Leicester City

35.4%

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – Arsenal

27%

Eoin Doyle – Swindon Town

27%

Mo Eisa – Peterborough United

26.4%

Nahki Wells – Bristol City

25.9%

Ian Handerson – Rochdale

25.4%

Ollie Watkins - Brentford

25.3%

The stats clearly show that Leicester’s sharp shooter is by far the most efficient striker in England’s top four tiers.

Vardy has converted 35.4% of his shots into goals this season, netting 19 times in 26 top-flight appearances.

35 of the veteran striker’s 53 shots in the Premier League have also hit the target in 2019/20, and this equates to a whopping 66%.

Vardy’s record is made even more impressive by the fact that Aubameyang – the Premier League’s second-highest scorer – has only converted 27% of his shots into goals.

Swindon’s Eoin Doyle has enjoyed a remarkable campaign so far, scoring 26 goals in 34 League Two appearances this term. But the Irishman has a far worse shot conversion rate than Vardy.

Mo Eia, Nahki Wells, Ian Henderson, and Ollie Watkins have all been in red-hot form throughout 2019/20. But no one can compare to Jamie Vardy.

It feels like Vardy has taken his game to another level this season, and an eight-game scoring streak – where he netted 11 goals from October to December – further cemented his status as the best striker in the country.

If the Premier League season isn’t able to resume, I’m sure you’ll agree that Jamie Vardy deserves to win the 2019/20 Golden Boot.
